Obama carries Germany
Tapmag can now predict that Senator Barack Obama will win the state of Germany. With 100% of votes in, Obama got 66.7% of the votes, compared to Hillary Clinton’s 31.8%. Wait, something doesn’t sound right…
Yes, technically Germany is a sovereign nation and not a U.S. state. But if you been around here lately you might have gotten a different impression. Everyone is excited. At least everyone I know, and I think that’s a pretty representative sample of the German populace. Anyhow, when the Democrats Abroad held their Global Primary in Berlin, I went to their polling place to do my civic duty. But I got turned away! Something about not being a U.S. citizen and stuff. Damned bureaucrats! No wonder only 1,524 German residents voted.
But let’s crunch the numbers, released today. Voting took place between February 5th and 12th. Dennis Kucinich got a total of 11, votes that is, not percentage, Clinton 449 and Obama 919. Obama’s stronghold was Berlin with 74% and 78.1% respectively (Berlin had two polling dates). Clinton’s best result? In Landstuhl, a tiny village in Rhineland-Palatine that would be damned to utter obscurity were it not for a large U.S. army presence there. But Obama beat her even here, in the heartland.
Worldwide, Obama got 65.6%, Clinton 32.7%. The Senator from Illinois crushed the former First Lady in Japan with 79.3%, while she swept the Dominican Republic with 90.3% (I heard that’s a great place to retire). In total, the Democrats Abroad will send 22 delegates to Denver (but they’ll each have only one-half of a vote), including 8 superdelgates.
